Quantification of curium isotopes in environmental samples: drawbacks, speciation and specific tracer

Résumé

In this study, drawbacks of the use of 243Am as a tracer in order to quantify curium isotopes during a complex chemical procedure were highlighted. Origins of these drawbacks were investigated through a speciation computation simulation. This simulation was based on the compilation of over 50 constants and allowed to confirm that in order to quantify curium isotopes, more reliable results are obtained using a specific curium isotope as a tracer. A new curium standard was then characterized and used to quantify a wide 244Cm activity range in environmental samples. Obtained results were in excellent agreement with spiked activities and more consistent than those obtained when using a 243Am tracer.
